As a parent, finding the right school for your child is such an important decision. What can make it feel even more challenging is trying to find the best school for your child during a move. It may seem overwhelming at first, but don’t worry too much. There is a wealth of resources available to you. First, decide what you think would be the best type of environment for your child given your new location. Is it private, charter or public? Is it Montessori or Developmental? Once you have narrowed this down, you will be able to best determine the type of school that will work for your children. Further, do your research on-line. Decide on what school district you want to focus your search for your new home. If you have chosen a private or charter school, then narrow your search in the surrounding community because often times buses are not available.
Once you have narrowed your search to a few schools, call and schedule a tour for each school and bring your kids with you. This is so important and worth the time. By taking a tour and meeting the teachers and the administration you will be able to determine if it is the right place for your child. Even if your child is little, bring him or her with you. You will be able to see if your child likes the school and feels comfortable. If you child is older, you can have a chat after the tour to discuss the school. It is so important to make them feel a part of the process. Ultimately, the decision will lie with you. However, if you include them in the process, they will share ownership in the decision and will be more willing to make it work.
